The International Safety Management (ISM) became mandatory for passenger ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, gas carriers, chemical tankers and fast cargo ships on 1 July 1998. It enters into force for all other vessels and mobile offshore drilling units of 500 gt and more on 1 July 2002.
