New shipping telephone service launched for seafarers

In an era of instant access and connectivity, seafarers have been a neglected lot. Things will, however, change with the launch of the world’s first shipping telephone service designed for seafarers.

'The CrewLink system was introduced by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) offering seafarers a fixed-price rate using universal phone cards and Inmarsat-based satellite phone equipment.

The equipment will enable seafarers to make telephone contact virtually anywhere in the world and calls will be at a single price. E-mail capability is expected to be added next year,' an ITF statement said.

The need for a realistically priced, global means by which seafarers could talk to their families and friends during long voyages was first highlighted in the mid-1990s by the International Committee for Seafarers Welfare, who identified isolation and fatigue as two major hazards of work at sea.

ITF General Secretary, Mr David Cockcroft, said the organisation had made available $1.3 million in funding to help launch the communication service.

Meanwhile, a strategic partnership bet-ween Maritime Communications Services (MCS) and maritimeChain.com has created the world’s first on-line accounting authority for maritime communications.

The new Accounting Authority (AA) will provide billing and communications services for ships and land mobiles to avoid incorrect billing for air charges from different land earth station operators (LESOs) around the globe.

The new system promises no registration or annual fees and competitive rates, with all transactions, including authorisations, handled on-line.
